Pedro Ribeiro

stage director

 

Portuguese stage director. Holds degrees in Stage Direction and Acting from the School of Music and Performing Arts of the University of Porto (ESMAE) with honours. He has also completed the Harp Course at Porto Music Conservatory with honours and the Opera Stage Directing Course from Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He has worked as a performer in classical plays, contemporary dance, performance art, short films and new circus as well as a set and costume designer. From 2005 to 2011, he worked with the international award-winning company Teatro de Marionetas do Porto as assistant stage director, costume and graphic designer. He has worked as a freelance stage director within opera, drama, musical theatre and contemporary site-specific works in some of Portugal’s major venues. He joined the Royal Opera House young artists programme and made his Royal Opera House directing début with Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’été Ribeiro succeeded in impressing upon his audience the beauty and pain of death, life and love” K.Austin, Bachtrack. In the following season he directed Mozart & Salieri in the Linbury Theatre, “Mozart & Salieri had never had a previous showing in Covent Garden. Mr. Ribeiro’s astute production has given it a strong introduction” J.Wald, Opera Britannia. After finishing his contract with the ROH he was invited to come back to direct Montsalvagte’s El Gato con Botas in the Linbury Theatre “From first note to last it’s a riot of puppetry. Ribeiro is careful to tell the story deftly and clearly. Children will be mesmerised but so will adults.” R.Morrison, The Times. Future engagements include: a new opera Lab “Across / Outra Margem” for Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation & enoa, the residency “Landscape of new music theatre and opera” for LOD muziektheater (Ghent) and La Monnaie (Brussels), Belgium; the new Thomas Guthrie production of Die Zauberflöte for the Longborough Festival Opera, Movement & Acting coach for the North Sea Vocal Academy in Denmark, working on the revivals of La Traviata, Rigoletto and Falstaff at the ROH, Covent Garden, A Caminho a new musical in Lisbon, Goldilocks & the Three Pigs for Opera Story Company in London, and directing a new production of La Traviata for the Sao Carlos National Theatre in Lisbon in 2018.
