Matthias Rexroth

Matthias Rexroth is a German countertenor who completed studies as an oboist, playing professionally before discovering his countertenor voice. He usually refers to himself as an Altus (In English, a “Male alto”). Matthias Rexroth won two competitions, both wins as first countertenor ever: the 37th Francisco-Viñas in Barcelona – first prize in the category Male voices, as well as ‘best countertenor’ and the 19th Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna, winning the first prize and eight additional prizes. He is highly valued internationally for his extraordinary sound quality. He has performed at Theater an der Wien, Musikverein Vienna, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Staatstheater Darmstadt, Oper Hamburg, Aalto-Musiktheater Essen, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opern- und Schauspielhaus Frankfurt, Norway State Opera Oslo, Semperoper Dresden, Oper Frankfurt, Staatsoper Berlin, Händel Festival, Kissinger Sommer, and Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, among other venues and events.
Matthias Rexroth teaches international master classes in New York, San Francisco, Israel, and other locations. Since 2014 he has been one of the leading teachers of Opera Academy, the young talents development programme of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera in Warsaw.
