Composing for Voices with Luís Tinoco

Workshop for young composers focusing on vocal and orchestral writing mentored by the Portuguese composer Luís Tinoco. 

Participants will be able to discuss their creative ideas while practicing their musical writing. Through the development of their own projects over a period of 7 months (December 2018 – July 2019), they will have the chance to work together with singers and the Orquestra Gulbenkian and improve their musical skills both in singing and orchestral writing.


The workshop will end with a public concert on 13th July 2019.
 

After the workshop, two participants might be selected in order to create a new work to be premiered by Orquestra Gulbenkian in the following seasons.


The workshop is structured in 3 periods.
Participants must be available for the 3 phases. 


PHASE 1 / 3-5 December 2018 
A three-day theory session during which Luís Tinoco will involve participants in a discussion on the practice of musical composition today and give guidelines in order to help participants to develop their new projects for the following phases of the workshop. Participants will be able to present some sketches to generate already some discussion on it during this first part of the workshop. 
 

PHASE 2 / 26-27 March 2019 
Reading sessions with the Orquestra Gulbenkian: participants will have the chance to listen to their musical sketches played by the orchestra, and receive some guidance on the creative process.
 

PHASE 3 / 8-13 July 2019 
Participants will present completed short works (10/12 minutes) and will attend the rehearsals by Orquestra Gulbenkian as a final preparation of their works.
There will be discussions on practical problems that emerge from the performance. The final concert will take place on July 13th 2019.

 Application process

- the artist must be connected to one of the 13 enoa member institutions
- the artist must contact his/her sending institution, which decides if they recommend his/her application
- the hosting institution confirms the list of participants after the registration deadline
- the network assumes the responsibility for the training fees, the costs of accommodation and travel

Number of participants: 4 participants sent by enoa institutions / 4 positions reserved for participants selected by the hosting institution

Arrival date: 2nd December 2018

Departure date: 6th December 2018

Accommodation (taken in charge by the sending institution):  several options walking distance (around 75€/night) 

 

 Artistic requirements

Selection Criteria: enoa partners will propose participants with some experience on the vocal/orchestral field, providing their application with the following material for evaluation: CV, a score of a work/sketches of a previous or an unfinished work, recording (recommendable), ideas about new projects related with the workshop theme. 

In order to confirm candidates, the applications/material will be evaluated by Luís Tinoco

 

Specific expectations: since the works will be played by Orquestra Gulbenkian, participants should consider the following set up for their work: 3,3,3,3 / 4,3,3,1 / 2 perc. / strings + 2 soloists (type of voices to be confirmed). Participants must be prepared to provide their scores properly and ready to be performed by the orchestra and soloists, including orchestral parts. At least 2 participants among the group might be selected to develop a work to be included in the Opera Conducting workshop repertoire organised at the Gulbenkian Foundation in 2020.
