Recitativi and arias of Mozart & Da Ponte’s operas

Working on Mozart recitativi is always a must-do for singers starting their career, but the music is nothing without its actual meaning. That meaning itself is volatile, and changes from one era to the next one.

Along with coaches Angélique Noldus and Marcin Lakomicki, the singers will be able to find a double understanding of singing these recitvativi, mostly from Don Giovanni or Le Nozze di Figaro.

The workshop’s objectives are:

- Working on both musical and words meaning of Mozart’s Les Nozze & Don Giovanni aria’s

- Working specifically on the recitativi and give them the place they deserve in the works of Mozart while exploring their meaning and link to the aria

- Working with clavecimbel to get as close as possible to the original musical idea of the aria

Dates: May 13th to May 17th, 2024

Arrival time : May 13th before 10.00 / Departure time : May 17th after 18.00

Place: Théâtre royal de la Monnaie / Rue Leopold 4 – 1000 Bruxelles

Application process

- the artist must be connected to one of the 12 enoa member institutions

- the artist must contact their sending institution, which decides if they recommend their application

- if recommended, the artist must send their application to their sending institution contact

- the network assumes the responsibility for the training fees, the costs of accommodation and travel

All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and will receive consideration without regard to their personal situation.

The enoa network is actively seeking to support artists currently under-represented in the opera world for historical, cultural or social reasons.

There are 8 positions for this workshop with 4 to 6 positions for enoa artists

Artistic requirements

Applicants should have:

- Solid musical background and willingness to work intensively on a specific repertoire both musically and on stage

- Knowledge of some arias & recitativi already is a plus but not an absolute necessity

To apply, please send:

- CV or biography in English

- At least 2 recent videos recordings, including preferably one Mozart recitativi and/or arias

- List of arias already sung and known from Le Nozze di Figaro or Don Giovanni

A list of arias and their recitativi will be sent at the end of April. The selected applicants are expected to have them prepared already when arriving at la Monnaie as there will not be time for dedicated to learning them during the workshop.
