Creative connections: practical workshop to gain outreach skills

mentored by Mark Withers

02 - 05 May 2023

Theaterakademie August Everding

Our societies are plural and diverse in many different ways and the world of theatre, especially musical theatre, needs to open up and become aware of this reality.

An important step towards this goal is to allow new, more diverse audiences to participate. The Theaterakademie August Everding will therefore host a workshop, lead by Mark Withers, who aims to give young artists from different disciplines the opportunity and the tools to find new ways to reach audiences directly and as widely as possible. In addition, the workshop will provide a space to reflect on the contribution artists can make to society and specific communities.

The workshop starts with a theoretical approach to the outreach topic concerning the questions: Why should you try to reach a new, diverse audience? Where is the gain for an artist in it?

The next part will be the analysis of the libretto and score of Antonio Vivaldis “Juditha triumphans”: How can the artist find their own way here, make it their own? They’ll prepare together the meeting with the community group, openness, creativity and the joy in new approaches will be one of the main points concerning the meeting.

The last part will be the practical work on a small piece of “Juditha triumphans” together with a  community group (still to be defined) and find out during these process the numerous possibilities of musical theatre to become a place for lively encounters.

This workshop will be lead by Mark Withers, clarinettist and coordinator of participatory educational projects. Mark designs and leads creative education and outreach projects as well as training programmes for artists working in the field.
