TRAINING
Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera
with Olga Pasichnyk and Andriy Yurkevych
23 - 30 April 2023
Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera
In the light of the political events in Ukraine but also with great artistic value of Ukrainian music in mind, the Opera Academy of the Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera in Warsaw, Poland, is organising a workshop that aims at celebrating the Ukrainian cultural heritage through discovering the unusual qualities of the Ukrainian vocal music.
The participants of the workshop will work on Ukrainian vocal repertoire and practice how to deal with various aspects of this music. Exploring different opera arias and songs will help them discover the rich Ukrainian vocal literature, which is still mostly unknown and not so widely performed. The workshop can also help artists to learn more about the intricacies of Ukrainian vocal music and to develop a deeper understanding of how to render them in performance.
Workshop sessions in singing, working with the orchestra and piano coaching will be held by great authorities in Ukrainian music:
>> Olga Pasichnyk - soprano singer
>> Andriy Yurkevych - conductor
>> Lech Napierała - pianist
Ukrainian vocal music exhibits a wide variety of forms – monodic, heterophonic, homophonic, harmonic and polyphonic. Yet, the traditional Ukrainian music is predominantly heterophonic. The songs tell the story of the people, their characteristics and the landscape they live in, as well as of rules of social life. Their classification falls between various genres, but also between ritual (incantations, laments, songs related to the folk calendar, wedding and work) and non-ritual songs (folk epics: dumy or ballads; and the lyric songs: love songs or lullabies). They were sung solo and in ensembles.
Thanks to the Ukrainian Art Songs project (www.ukrainianartsong.ca), providing vocal music of the leading Ukrainian composers, as well as other resources available to download for the participants, the Ukrainian Vocal Music workshop will basically focus on the music of such composers, as: Yakiv Stepovyi, Stefania Turkewich, Kyrylo Stetsenko, Mykola Lysenko, Vasyl Barvinsky, Stanyslav Liudkevych, Denys Sichynsky, but also: Konstiantyn Dankevych, Semen Hulak-Artemovsky, Vitaliy Kyreiko, Stanislav Liudkevych, Borys Lyatoshynky, Heorhiy Maiboroda, Yulii Meitus and Mykhailo Verykivsky.
The workshop will end with a participants’ concert, which will be held at the Redutowe Halls of the Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera, Warsaw, Poland.
