Author and dramaturg Willem Bruls (1963) finished his studies Literature, Music and History of Art in 1990 at the Free University in Amsterdam. As an author on music and theatre he wrote several books, most notably a study on Wagner’s Ring-cycle and on Orientalism in Opera. In 2009 his collected essays on music and theatre were published. As a music journalist he contributed to papers as Opernwelt, De Standaard (Belgium) and The Wall Street Journal Europe. As a dramaturge he worked on Il re pastore, The Abduction from the Seraglio, Pique Dame, Werther, Prince Igor and Xerse (Lille). This last production with Guy Cassiers. With Pierre Audi he realized La Juive, Partenope, Orlando furioso, Médée, and Tristan und Isolde. Together with choreographer Krzysztof Pastor he made ballet adaptations of Shéhérazade, Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest. For the Ruhrtriennale and Toneelgroep Amsterdam he wrote a stage adaptation of Pasolini’s Teorema, which was selected for the Lincoln Center Festival in New York. Bruls gave workshops on contemporary music theatre in Barcelona, Hobart, Stavanger, Ghent and Aix-en-Provence. He is preparing an opera libretto Aleppo. He is also an advisor for the performing arts to the Dutch Arts Council.
